Jamiyah Singapore, a Malay/Muslim Charity Organisation commemorating its 90th anniversary of founding this year, launched a Malay children’s book series on Sunday, 20th March 2022.
The series, titled ‘Ceria Dengan Cerita’ comprises 12 individual stories, all of which feature animals as their main characters. These stories narrate acts of misdeeds by the characters and outline how their actions affect the lives of other characters around them before concluding with a moral lesson that can be learnt from the mistake.
These books are written in simple Malay, which makes them suitable to be used as resources for the teaching of the Malay language in preschools and primary schools, as well as for leisure reading by young children. This book project was supported by the Lee Kuan Yew Fund for Bilingualism.
The ‘Ceria Dengan Cerita’ series is written by Associate Professor Kamsiah Abdullah. Dr Kamsiah has been an educator for over 60 years, teaching students from primary school to university. Dr Kamsiah Abdullah also taught Malay Language and Linguistics at the University of Brunei Darussalam and is currently lecturing at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS).
